What BPM means in music
BPM stands for Beats Per Minute (from the English term Beats Per Minute). It is the unit used to measure a song's tempo — how many rhythmic pulses occur in 60 seconds. A higher BPM means a faster song; a lower BPM means a slower one.
The concept is essential both for musicians who need to synchronize a performance with a recording and for producers who build tracks from loops and samples. A DJ, for example, uses BPM for beatmatching — adjusting two songs to the same tempo before transitioning between them.
How to find a song's BPM
The most direct method is tap tempo: tap the button (or spacebar) along with the song's main beat — usually the kick drum or the rhythmic accent. The counter calculates the average interval between taps and displays the BPM in real time.
For an accurate result, follow these steps:
- Start the song and listen to a few bars to get a feel for the tempo.
