Proper Posture and Position
Proper posture helps prevent injuries and makes learning easier. Sit upright, rest the guitar body on your right leg, or on your left leg in the classical position, and keep the guitar neck angled slightly upward.
Your left wrist should be slightly bent forward, allowing your fingers to press the strings with their fingertips rather than their sides.
Your First Chords
Start with the simplest chords: Em, Am, and E. These three chords are already used in hundreds of songs.
- Em = fingers 1 and 2 on strings 4 and 5, 2nd fret
- Am = fingers 1, 2, and 3 on strings 2, 3, and 4, 2nd fret
- E = fingers 1, 2, and 3 on strings 1, 4, and 5
Basic Rhythms
Rhythm is what brings music to life. To begin, learn a simple downstroke pattern: four beats per measure, following the song's tempo.
Then progress to alternating strokes, down and up, and eventually to characteristic rhythms such as country, rock, and folk strumming patterns.
Beginner Practice Plan
Practice for at least 15 minutes a day. Consistency beats intensity when learning guitar.
- Weeks 1–2: Em, Am, and E chords and transitions between them
- Weeks 3–4: add C, G, and D; practice simple songs
- Month 2: learn pentatonic scales and basic strumming patterns
- Month 3: try your first complete song from beginning to end
