How the I–vi–ii–V Progression Sounds and Why It Works
The progression begins on degree I, moves to vi, reaches ii, and ends on V. In C major, the sequence is C, Am, Dm, and G. The first chord establishes a home base. The second keeps notes from the key but changes major rest into a minor color. The third prepares the arrival. The fourth creates the clearest tension and points back to the first chord.
The complete movement relates to the circle of fifths, but one distinction helps you study it more precisely. The vi–ii–V–I section follows a chain of descending fifths in its roots: A to D, D to G, and G to C. The I–vi passage connects C to Am by a third, not by a direct fifth. Thus, I–vi–ii–V combines a tonal opening with the classic preparation-and-resolution section.
In C, you can visualize the chord notes like this:
- C: C, E, and G.
- Am: A, C, and E.
- Dm: D, F, and A.
- G: G, B, and D.
Notice the shared notes. C and Am have C and E. Am and Dm have A. Dm and G have D. G and C have G. These connections reduce the distance between voices and help the cycle repeat without sounding like separate blocks. On keyboard, keep common tones when the voicing allows it. On guitar, choose nearby shapes before reaching for widely separated open chords.
When G returns to C, the ear recognizes the resolution. Then C can immediately begin another cycle. This dual function gives the progression continuous motion. In a pop or worship arrangement, the return supports the groove and leaves room for guitar, piano, bass, percussion, and voice. In a folk or blues setting, the same direction can support passing lines, neighbor tones, and more active counterlines.
Compare the cycle with the ii–V–I progression. In C, it uses Dm, G, and C. I–vi–ii–V adds C and Am before that resolution. You gain an initial preparation measure and a relative-minor color. To hear the difference today, play four cycles of Dm–G–C and then four cycles of C–Am–Dm–G, keeping 66 BPM.
